Flatwater

Quetico FW Wilderness Expedition August 2014

Applications now being accepted for the flatwater expedition of the year into the western canoeing wilderness on the western boundary of Ontario

Now in the planning stage is a flatwater wilderness expedition to Quetico Provincial Park, the `jewel in the crown` of wilderness canoeing in Ontario.   Quetico Park is a huge wilderness area of around 1/2 million hectares with no regular signposted campsites and portages such as we find in other popular Ontario Parks, like Algonquin Park.  The initial estimated trip length is for just over two weeks (actually 10 days of paddling and 6 days of driving) during the period August 8th - August 24th.

The land portion of this expedition will take us pretty well across the entire width of Ontario including a couple of evenings camping along the north shore of Superior as we journey on to the far western boundary of Ontario to start our wilderness expedition.  My Quetico canoe is, you might say ``going home`` to visit where it all started, not too far beyond Atikokan, Ontario.

Come to where the skies are big, the days are long, the scenary prestine, the water endless, the fish in abundance, come relax in canoeing heaven, in Gods country in 2014.

This trip is designed for a minimum of six experienced paddlers (competent novices please with canoe camping experience) and a maximum of eight paddlers.  The difficulty factor is guaged at a ``2C`` rating as there will be a few long portgaes but the over all daily distances paddled will be very modest and the pace more relaxing and vacation minded with lots of time for fishing, relaxing, drawing, photography or just chilling around the fire.

Using normal club cost sharing protocols the initial budget estimate is around $800.00 per person including shared transportation costs, park permits, reservation and camping fees and the cost of a commercial shuttle from Atikokan into the park along some rough lumber trails.

A meet and greet of participants and intitial planning meeting is scheduled for May 14th, 2014 at 7:00pm at the home of one of the co-leaders.

A non-refundable deposit will be required (unless you find a suitably competent person to assume your seat) once the group meets to get down to serious planning.

The co-leaders for this wilderness trip are Michele Baddoo (613-271-7169) and Paul Gallagher (613-421-6656)
