Flooding Near Algonquin Park’s East Gate - Updated

Historically high water levels on the Madawaska River near Algonquin Park’s eastern gate have forced some families to flee their homes and prompted the Township of South Algonquin to declare a local state of emergency.

At issue is flooding on the engorged river system and the potential failure of the Galeairy Lake Dam in the Village of Whitney, which is located about three hours west of Ottawa.

Click here for Ontario Ministry of Transportation regulations related to drinking and paddling.  Penalties can include driver's licence suspension for days or months or even a lifetime ban. They make it clear that these regulations apply to the operation of both motorized and non-motorized vessels including canoes and kayaks.

The Paddle Canada policy on intoxicants is no use within 8 hours before paddling.
